Interior and Exterior Rating System
There are various aircraft condition rating systems. The industry standard, however, seems to be the "1 to 10 scale" displayed here. Please read the comments for each numerical value CAREFULLY when using this system.
Exterior
10 |
Aircraft is new from the manufacturer. |
9 |
New Paint. No scratches or dents to the paint and airframe. |
8 |
Airframe and paint are in near new condition with minor scratches (less than 2 square feet) noticeable only after close examination. |
7 |
High gloss is still apparent on paint. Scratches in small numbers (less than 4 square feet) are visible primarily on the leading edges. Small dents may be visible (less than 2 square feet) on the airframe. |
6 |
Paint shines, high gloss not apparent. Several small scratches can be found (less than 6 square feet). High usage areas display dents and chips (fuel tanks, wing walks, door handles, etc.) Small stress cracks in fiberglass windshield. Milky areas around the edge of the windows are possible. |
5 |
Aircraft is still attractive. Paint shows no sign of apparent corrosion, paint is relatively sound. Any paint oxidation can be wax buffed to a shine. Leading edges are rough and display wear from abrasion. Touch ups and repairs are noticeable. Small number of short cracks in cowlings and fiberglass are apparent. Most windows display milky edges. Several of the windows may display stress cracking or slight scratches. |
4 |
Paint is OK, generally sound yet dull over half of the aircraft. Small portions of the paint need special attention from chipping, oxidation or corrosion. Majority of the windows is scratched. |
3 |
Aircraft, even after clean up and polish, is ungainly at best. Paint is peeling and displays no shine. Leading edges are oxidized. A moderate amount of dents and chips can be found. All windows are scratched. |
2 |
Aircraft is in sad condition. Paint is in poor condition, oxidized and peeling. Airframe is in need of repairs to cracks, dents and corrosion. |
1 |
Aircraft will most likely not pass an annual without repairs. Airframe is full of corrosion and dents. Paint would be better buffed off than left on. |
Interior

7 |
Cleaning will remove most stains. A small amount of use is displayed. Small scratches on seat covers are apparent. Headliner is clean and no scratches to the instrument and interior panels. |
6 |
Steam cleaning interior shows major improvement. Carpet shows slight wear at high traffic spots. Headliner comes almost completely clean after attention. Fabric is not torn or frayed. Small scratches apparent on vinyl areas. Interior is still attractive after thorough cleaning. |
5 |
Headliner slightly stained but not torn. High use areas continue to look worn even after cleaning. Some cracking and fraying in apparent on less than half of the seating.
